The Year 12 Ball was a stunning event last Friday night! The ‘Secret Garden’ theme produced a WOW entry to the ballroom and created some fabulous memories for the girls’ of their final year at MLC.
Thank you Dee Haughton and our team of Year 12 tutors for guiding the Ball Committee and supporting our Year 12s to make this such a successful evening. Thank you also to other staff members who came along to see the girls and thier partners arriving. It helped create a special sense of occasion.
Middle and Senior Years’ Attendance, Uniform Checks and Daily Notices in Terms 2-4
In Terms 2-4, Middle and Senior Years’ attendance, uniform checks and daily notices, which, in Term 1, are being addressed in the Pastoral Care Period, will occur in the Registration Period at the commencement of Period 1. Period 1 has been extended by five minutes to accommodate this.
In 2011, Middle and Senior Years’ timetable changed from a five period day to six periods per day, creating more ‘between period’ movement around campus and shortened recess and lunchtimes. Extra time added into recess and lunch for Terms 2-4 will allow a less rushed feel and more ‘connecting’ time for staff and students during these breaks. The change from Term 2 also aligns recess and lunchtimes across Years K-12, facilitating programs that involve different zones of the College.
The adjusted shape of our morning will be published at the commencement of Term 2.
The Pastoral Care curriculum will still be delivered by all tutors in Years 7-12 through the longer Tutorial periods on Tuesdays and Thursdays; this remains unchanged. The fortnightly House Meeting, Year Meeting, Chapel and Assembly also provide opportunities for girls to connect with their tutors and other members of their Year and Tutorial Groups.
Scholar in Residence
On Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 February, we will be hosting Alice Pung, writer, lawyer and teacher, as Scholar in Residence 2012. We thank the former Parents’ Association for sponsoring our Scholar program and we look forward to the new parent group continuing their support.
Alice is the author of two books, Her Father’s Daughter and Unpolished Gem. The latter won the 2007 Australian Newcomer of the Year award in the Australian Book Industry Awards and was shortlisted for several other awards. She was a keynote speaker at the Leading in Languages Youth Summit attended by Bo Yun Lu (Year 12), Betty Lim (Year 12), Devina Marcelyn (Year 9) and Selena Sebastian (Year 9) last year. Each school was granted $1000 to run a project to promote the importance of knowledge and understanding of and respect for Asian languages and cultures. In collaboration with Mrs Anne Ashby (Coordinator, International Students) and the Deans of Middle and Senior Years’ Education, the girls’ request was to invite Alice Pung to speak to groups of MLC students about her experiences as an Asian Australian.
Alice Pung has achieved much for her age and will serve as a role model of a successful and articulate young woman. A program of three sessions on each day has been designed for groups of students across Years 7-12.
