In our fast-paced society, it is easy to get caught up in the ‘myth’ that if we are not busy all of the time, we are not working hard enough, not exercising enough or not providing our children with enough etc.  But there is much to be said for the art of doing nothing.  We all need time to recuperate, regenerate, reflect and rest and it is important that our children learn this too. In a day when our lives are governed by our iphones, ipods or ipads, it is very rare to see people waiting for a bus, or an appointment without one of these in their hands.

So this week, I would like to advocate that we all spend a few minutes of each day simply “doing nothing”.  Just sit, and be. Reflect on how you’re feeling, what you’re thinking about and what you’re doing.  Try to just observe the thoughts that come and go without judging yourself.  Try not to make plans or promises to yourself, just sit and notice your thoughts and the world around you.
